EWYAS Harold celebrated Palm Sunday this year in a less than traditional way.

Villagers swapped the usual donkey for two llamas to lead the Easter procession from one entrance of St Michael and All Angels Church.

The animals circled the village before returning to the church for the service.

Robert Dewar, co-owner of Golden Valley Llamas, said that he, along with llamas Stenness and Brodgar, were "delighted to be invited".

"Obviously it was not a traditional Palm Sunday procession but The Rev Penny Evans phoned us up to see if we would be interested in being involved," he said.

"The llamas were very willing - they are both gentle creatures who love meeting people. We also had the bonus of fantastic weather on the day.

"About 50 people joined us, it was a fantastic day. It's always a pleasure to be involved in village activities."

Palm Sunday celebrates the story of Christ's entry into Jerusalem. It is celebrated in many Christian churches by processions in which branches of palms are carried.

But the procession isn't the first time the llamas have been centre stage.

They also took part in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012 and often show their faces at village fetes.
