ROSS-on-Wye's town council offices is set to move to a new home at a cost of up to £5,000.

Town councillors this week agreed to re-locate from Corn Exchange to the Old Chapel in Cantilupe Road.

Councillor David Ravenscoft told the Hereford Times that the move would have a number of benefits, including better disabled access, more space for administration staff and records and a larger room for full council meetings.

"There will be some expenditure required for the move, including installing phones, computers and decorating," said Cllr Ravenscroft.

"When the council has vacated the Corn Exchange, it is intended to rent out the space."

His motion at Monday night's full Town Council meeting was approved by the majority of councillors, with Cllr John Edwards saying that they have to demonstrate to the town that "they are doing something" after securing a number of assets from Herefordshire Council.

But, Cllr Phil Cutter said that the present facilities in Corn Exchange are "perfectly adequate" and relocating would "abuse the rate payers' money."

He said: "We have disabled access, a lift and toilets.

"We spent a considerable amount of money for the Queen's Jubilee to have gates and make it look like a proper building.

"My main worry is why are we going to spend this extra money when we already have a building that is perfectly adequate for what we need?"

It was also decided to hold marriages, funerals and other events at the Old Chapel and re-name it "Ross-on-Wye Town Hall."

Room charges would between £100 and £150 an hour per ceremony and £50 for other events.

A lettings policy will be drawn up by the council's policy and management committee.
