ON March 29, ninety Radnor County Brownies celebrated the hundredth anniversary of the Brownies with a fun day at the sports centre in Knighton. Brownies from Llandrindod Wells, Knighton, Presteigne, Builth Wells, and Rhayader attended the event. The theme for the day was Past, Present and the Future.

Past activities included each girl having a photo taken by Brownie leader Zoe Penlington and then a sepia image being printed out, decorating biscuits and making peg dolls. Present activities included all the girls having their nails painted, making hair braids and soap carving and future activities were launching rockets including ones they had made themselves, planting sunflower seeds and parachute games. The centre piece of the event was a large mural that had been painted by the girls and had a star with a picture on drawn by every Brownie in the county. All the Brownies had a go at each activity helped by leaders, members of Trefoil and Knighton Guides. At the end of the activities everyone sang happy birthday after a candle on a special cake was lit. The cake was then cut for everyone to have a slice.

To finish off the day's events County Commissioner Katy Jones buried a time capsule containing photographs of each group, badges, a daily paper, a receipt for bread and milk plus other items to be dug up in twenty five years time.

The Girls Guide Association was formed in 1910 led by Agnes Baden-Powell and in 1914 a junior section for girls under 11 was formed called 'Rosebuds', renamed Brownies in 1915.
