THE club that claims it has the oldest bowling green in the world celebrated its 530th birthday on Saturday.

The green, owned by Hereford Bowling Club, started just off Bewell Street in 1484.

Today, it is hidden by view, flanked by a block of flats, a pub bearing its name and the Tesco car park.

To try and encourage more people to come along and find out more about the club, bosses held a celebration day.

People were invited to try bowling, while a raffle was held and cakes and bottles sold.

"It went very well - it was a nice day and we had a few people having a go at bowls," said club president Phill Williams.
