A NEW date has been set for the official opening of Hereford's Old Market development.

Ribbons will be cut and the first shop doors will be opened on May 9.

Debenhams, Waitrose, TK Maxx, and Next were all set to open on April 17, but the opening has been delayed due to the “bad weather”.

Stanhope director Gary Bourne said: "Due to the exceptional weather conditions experienced earlier in the year, and the subsequent impact on the construction works, including the ability to undertake external works, the Old Market will open on Friday May 9.

"This decision has been reached despite accelerated works over the last few weeks and months.

"And, although the development is now set to open a little later than reported, we are still on track to open in advance of the actual contract programme.

"Over the next few weeks, the finishing touches to the paving, planting and car parks, as well as testing and commissioning of services will take place to ensure that customers benefit from a scheme that is of the highest quality when Old Market opens its doors to the public."

UPDATE: Contrary to rumour and speculation, Stanhope will not face financial penalties due to the delay.

Opening in May would still be months ahead of the agreed date in the contract programme, at which point any penalties may come into play.
