THERE isn't much that would get children to go to school on a Saturday.

But for 20 students fromThe Hereford Academy the chance to abseil down their school was more than enough reason to wake up early on a weekend.

Students joined school staff and members of the Rotary Club of the City of Hereford for the abseil down the rear of the building, all to raise money for CLIC Sargent, which supports children with cancer, and St Michael's Hospice.

Principal John Sheppard said the sun shone on the brave team of 42 abseilers last Saturday.

"We couldn’t have wished for a nicer day. It was fantastic to see both students and adults overcome their fear of heights and going over the edge backwards. Their enthusiasm and perseverance was all for a good cause and it was a joy to see them in action," he said.

Although a final total has yet to be confirmed, it is believed the abseil, along with food sold on the day, may have raised as much as £2,000.

Head girl Nicole Forrer, said: "Taking part in a unique opportunity like this helps raise awareness of the charities that the school is currently supporting. It was an amazing experience and great to see all age groups participating in the event."

The event was supported by the Rotary Club, who are involved with the school's fund-raising group, Interact, which helped organise the event.

The money will help the Bartestree-based hospice continue building its extension which will allow more people to be treated at the hospice.
