A FORMER Hereford Cathedral head boy has been recognised for his surgical skills.
Sam Scotcher, who is now a medicine student at Bristol University, scooped the top award at the fourth annual National Conference for Aspiring Surgeons earlier this month.
The event is held by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in association with NHS Education South West and SCRUBS – the University of Bristol Surgical Society – at the university's school of chemistry.
Sam, in the fourth year of his degree, won best in trauma and orthopaedics category and best oral presentation overall after delivering a paper on the treatment of elbow fractures in children.
He said: "Winning this award is a great privilege. It will help me in the future if I choose to pursue a career in surgery. I still have a way to go before I make that decision and so for now I'm just concentrating on passing my exams."
There were more than 40 presentations overall which were grouped into specialities such as heart surgery, paediatric surgery, plastic surgery, trauma and orthopaedics.
