TWO county medics have been been commended for trying to save the life of a man who was in a collision with a train last year.

Paramedic Kate Owen and emergency medical technician Mark Bellerby were on duty when the incident happened near Hereford Railway Station on August 1.

They arrived to find Luftar Coku underneath a train and was suffering from serious multiple injuries.

Despite facing extreme temperatures, Kate and Mark climbed onto the track and treated Mr Coku who was still partially underneath the train.

They managed to use all their skill and expertise to stabilise him before carrying him to safety.

Mr Coku, a 39-year-old from Llanwarne, was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, but later died from his injuries.

Kate and Mark received a West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) chief officer commendation at a ceremony last week in recognition of their efforts. WMAS chief executive Anthony Marsh said: "Being the best takes an awful lot of hard work, determination, commitment and professionalism and I am really proud and grateful for all of the hard work that our staff and volunteers put in every day to continue to improve the organisation."
