Council puts off decision on future Bath Street offices

HEREFORDSHIRE Council has put off a decision on offering its Bath Street offices as the site for a new Hereford Fire Station.

The council confirmed this afternoon (Thurs) that the decision due next week will now be taken on April 14.

As previously reported by the Hereford Times, the council has said that it would be looking to sell the site on the open market  if the fire station proposal falls through.

The council is facing a vociferous - and growing – opposition to its plan for the site.

Heritage campaigners, in particular,  make a preservation case for the offices as city’s former working boys home, despite English Heritage turning down a listing application.

Other concerns question the need for a new fire station and the suitability of Bath Street  for that station.

Once again, another bucket of tripe created by the Council Cabinet. It's all so predictable. They come up with an idea, start the ball rolling, it results in chaos and they go back into their burrow to figure out where it all went wrong.
I mean, you'd think that given their numerous experiences with failure they'd tread more carefully and simply think! Yes, think! That is all that's required.
When you make a mistake, and God knows, they've made some, then why not reflect, use hindsight, give an issue a single backward glance and learn from the experience. This Cabinet don't do any of these things. They just lurch from one disaster to another.
I mean, take 'me'. I know I moan. I do. I moan all the time. Im relentless but in Gods name it's only because I care about our homeland which is being destroyed by chaotic governance.
I ain't blaming Mr Johnson too much. He's just playing the hand shoved his way by Mr Jarvis but in all honesty, how much more of this can we take.
And it ain't just me. So many people out there on the many social network sites feel very much the same. They want calm, rational thinking and sound judgement. That's all. Nothing else. And what do we get served up to us? Badly thought out schemes and botched plans that see us haemorrhaging wealth left, right and centre.
Go onto Hereford Voice! This topic raised by the blogger Dippy Hippy has generated over two thousand views and 141 posts by highly intelligent people who care and object to the way in which the Council Cabinet sought to rid themselves of the Bath Street site. These people are not being troublesome simply for the sake of it. Many care about the buildings on both sides of the proposed deal. Many care about the heritage of both locations and many object to the notion that the Council are giving away to much and not getting good value for us the Hereford public.
Like I've said, I know I moan. I go on and on but there is a source to this itch I have and it's this bloody Council Cabinet. They've gotta go! If I had no faith in human nature and honour. I could easily be persuaded to believe that the Cabinet are carrying out 'a scorched earth' policy knowing full well that in 2015 they will be gone and out of office anyway.
Everyone with the ability to think knows what was done by the Cabinet to secure Rockfield Road Car Park. It's well documented and I think its fair to say that some within the Cabinet regret the outcome of this acquisition.
What are they doing now? Some fifty yards away, they've served a notice of eviction on Rosé Tinted Rags which is a tiny little business based at Tann Brook Centre that provides, love, care, support, training and friendship to the weak and vulnerable within our society.
Despite the fact that they know they made a mess of acquiring Rockfield Road, and fully cognisant that the Road To Nowhere ain't going to get built anytime soon, they're are actively trying to kick this profitable business over the hedge and out of their way. It is truly madness and now everyone who has a vested interest in this little slice of heaven on earth is pleading with the Council to extend the eight weeks so that new premises can be found and continue to provide social care.
This is why I moan. I want the Council Cabinet to enter a room, lock it, pull the blinds down, disconnect the phone and do nothing untill 2015. We need a break and you need a break from me moaning on about the direction of our Counties travel as we edge ever nearer to the economic abyss.

Bravo!
Bobby you are quite right. We can take no more of this lunacy. We know they are going, they know they're going. We all have to stand together for one more year and prevent them causing our city and its people anymore chaos, destruction and misery.
We lurch from one disaster to another, with money being thrown at arms length companies, like its going out of fashion. They don't answer to us - they just take, take, take - and we have nothing to show for it.
Nobody is ever held accountable for failure - quite the opposite. Payoffs and gagging orders.
Services are being slashed, or cut completely, childrens services failing in every area, our roads are quite possibly the worst in the country, and we have no toilets....we literally don't have a pot to pee in!
Something has got to change - and next year it will!!

Hear hear to the above posts from King Bobby and Dippy Hippy!

But Bobby says we should go easy on Council Leader Johnson. Why? The man's a walking disaster: ever since I saw his hapless performance at the Kindle Centre last September, I've been thinking 'I wonder how the present administration actually elects its Leaders? Perhaps its like Lotto? Or is it 'Buggins Turn'? Or maybe the shortest straw gets a go. Clearly the old buffer is way out of touch with what the electorate wants. He lives in Colwall, he shops in Malvern and he drives to Brockington.

And don't read Bill Tanner's report as meaning they've caved in to public opinion. Not a chance. They're far too canny. What have they said? They've deferred the decision until April 14. Three days before the grand opening of Alcatraz - sorry the Old Market. So between now and then - just 3 weeks by my reckoning - Hereford deserves a public meeting, at which all the parties (yes, and I suppose we'll have to give Cllr Johnson a hearing) should come along and state their cases.

Any one else fancy the idea of a public meeting?

An update Grid Knocker!
Over at Hereford Voice, Cllr Mark Hubbard has posted that there IS to be a public meeting. This is seriously good news, as the proposed meeting on April 14 that you mentioned is to be yet another held behind closed doors.
Cllr Hubbard's public meeting will be the only opportunity for people to really have their say.

Good news that there may be a public meeting, even if we are (metaphorically) approaching the 59th minute of the 11th hour!

And yes, by all means let's hear arguments from all sides: the demolition enthusiasts (such as Cllrs Johnson and Podger), the 'building huggers' (to paraphrase Cllr Jim Kenyon), and of course those of us who believe that a new and sustainable use can be found for the former Working Boys Home.

Grid Knocker, I am so pleased that I am not the only one that thinks the OLM looks like Her Majesty's Cell block H, it really is a blight on our historic city, if any ordinary citizen had put in planning for this build - it would have been rejected, it overshadows the city like a monument to all that is wrong with our Council and its Cabinet rule.
