A HEREFORD businessman is fearing for the future after Tesco confirmed plans to open a store in Whitecross.

The supermarket giant has bought the lease of the former Buckingham Inn pub and has set the wheels in motion to turn it into a convenience store - creating up to 20 jobs.

The Buckingham on Whitecross Road will go the way of the Game Cock pub after the latter was converted into a Tesco Express on Holme Lacy Road in 2010.

Craig Bradbury, who owns Cotterell Street Stores claims that a new Tesco will definitely impact on his business.

"The shop has been in demise for a little while due to the recession and this will further quicken with a Tesco round the corner," said Mr Bradbury.

"It is definitely a worry, but all we can hope is that the local community supports us like they always have done."

Simon Petar, corporate affairs manager at Tesco, said that the Express store will be open from early in the morning until late at night.

"We will bring additional choice for everyday items, like bread and milk, and other convenience goods," said Mr Petar.

"We look forward to serving both our customers and the local community in the coming months.”

Mr Petar added that applications for minor works to be undertaken at the store will be submitted to Herefordshire Council within the next few weeks.

It is anticipated that the new store will be open by the end of the year.

I live in Whitecross, and actually think we are pretty well served!
We don't need this Tesco Express!
We have Craigs shop, the Co-op at the top of the road, Sanisburys at the bottom, and a garage which opens late, if you run out of milk!!
That's the top, middle and bottom of Whitecross - sorted!
Tesco are just muscling in!!

To change from a pub to a shop does not require planning permission from the Council so it can hardly be their fault. Tesco will need permission for any alterations to the building though.
I agree that we are Tescoed already and do not need yet another. Also these Express shops are not that cheap overall

Have to add though, I would always prefer to see premises used, we have enough empty buildings in High Town!....Its a shame Craigs' shop couldn't take it over. That would be the best of both worlds.

Craig has taken over several shops in the past, none of them have been successful and are now closed. High Town (Lilly's)and Widemarsh Street (Gracie's) are two of his.

I like you all shop where I wish if you don't want to shop at this shop so be it what's the problem. If locals had used it as a pub it would still be open, they did not so it has a change of use.

You're not from Whitecross then, Hereford person?
You will therefore, be unaware of The Whitecross Triangle. Not unlike The Bermuda Triangle, the area consist of 3 points, wjthin which are contained The Plough, The Britannia, The Cotteral and up until recently, The Buckingham. Folk set off on a merry jaunt between these 3 points, and sometimes become lost for days....even weeks!!
It has been the downfall - quite literally - of many locals over the years.
My own theory is that Health and Safety have secretly stepped in, to remove one of the sharp corners!!
(Unfortunately, like The Plough when Lew, then Mim left, and the Brit since Alex and Jane left, The Buck was never the same after John sadly departed.)

Another Tesco?, why not make every other shop a Tesco, we would not need to walk very far to the shops, I think that we should have one on the Leominster road at Holmer, or even on the race course
