A VISUALLY impaired man has set up his own massage business in the city.

Mark Lawrence, who only has minimal sight in his right eye, currently works four days a week at the Hairspace studio in Widemarsh Street.

The 35-year-old, who was registered blind at birth after being born four months premature, previously worked as a masseur at Hereford United. He left the Edgar Street club last month.

Mark said that he has already treated a few people, including some of his former Bulls colleagues.

"The club has been really supportive and were happy to help," said Mark, who lives in Roman Road.

"I was at the club for two seasons, which was a great achievement really, especially when you consider how bad the financial situation is down there.

"I was doing an adult course at the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC) and the Government paid for me to work at the club for six months at Hereford United under an employment initiative scheme

"But, I did so well that they decided to take me on."

Mark, who was diagnosed as being partially deaf seven years ago, has been a masseur for nearly three years after training at RNC.

He previously studied maths and history at the University of South Wales, as well as undertaking a masters degree in business management.

"I had great training at RNC - it gave me a lot of confidence and practical training," said Mark.
