No kidding - goat is the meat for success

THERE has been no stopping two Herefordshire farmers establishing themselves in the goat meat industry.
Since setting up in the business girlfriend and boyfriend Aimee Parry and Thomas Mitchell, of Mileshiggins Farm in Wormelow, have been making a big impression in the sector.
The couple, who have been together five years, have won two GOLD Awards - one for Moroccan goat sausages and the other for the plain goat sausages.
These were awarded at The Royal Welsh Winter Fair 2013 after entering four uncooked sausages in each flavour in the other meats category.
Not content with just winning awards the couple have expanded their product range to include burgers, meatballs, as well as mince, diced and chops.
The couple's nannies have now all kidded.
“This is the first time we will have bred our own goats on the farm," said Aimee.
"Kidding has gone really well and all kids and mothers are very healthy and happy."
The couple also run a flock of sheep which are lambing now and lamb products will follow in due course.
"Goats are a lot more work to look after than sheep," said Aimee.
"They will get out of any field as the grass is always better on the other side according to goats.
"They are also more susceptible to parasites so we have a tight worming programme.
"They also require higher levels of foot care so regular foot trimming is essential."
As for the future the couple are already making plans.
"By next spring we would like to double the amount of breeding nannies we have," said Aimee.
"We would like to have put our own building up on the farm which would mean we could expand the business more.
"We would like to increase our flock of sheep and lamb more ewes.
"Our meat preparation room is fully functioning with our own equipment which we are investing in.”
The couple also plan to sell their produce at farmers markets.
