TESCO has confirmed that a petrol station will not be part of its plans to open a new supermarket in Ross-on-Wye.

The retail giant is proposing to build a 40,000 square-foot store off Overross Street - creating around 250 jobs.

A four-pump petrol station was part of the plans, but Tesco has this week said that this has been removed following consultation with Ross Town Council, local residents and the Environment Agency.

"We are always reviewing the detail of our planning applications so we can respond to local considerations and circumstances," said Simon Petar, corporate affairs manager at Tesco.

"We know that some of our neighbours were concerned about the proximity of the petrol filling station to their properties.

"I hope this alleviates their worries and demonstrates we are serious about listening to communities."

Councillor Andy Atkinson, ward councillor for Ross-on-Wye East, said that the news is a "serious blow" for anyone who wants a Tesco in the town.

"I do not know why Tesco has decided to remove the petrol station, but those in favour of the store wanted one," said Coun Atkinson.

If approved, a total of 307 car parking spaces will be created, with shoppers enjoying three hours of free parking.
