A COUNTY woman has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Bessie Gardner, who resides at the Weir Nursing Home in Swainshill, has lived in Herefordshire for the past 11 years having moved to Eaton Bishop to live with her daughter.

She grew up in Brotton, a small mining village in North Yorkshire and was sent into service to work as a maid.

Bessie later worked for Lord Hawke before she met her future husband Jack. They married in Caxton Hall in Westminster in 1935 and went on to have four children, 10 grandchildren,18 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Bessie also worked as a cashier and wages clerk at the Co-operative and for the civil service.

She retired in her mid 60s and moved to Kent to be nearer two of her children.

Bessie has been living at the Weir since 2011.
