A HEREFORDSHIRE teenager could be set to follow in the footsteps of Ellie Goulding after singing her way to one of the UK's most renowned music venues.

Sixteen-year-old Raye Harvey – who also plays the violin, piano and guitar – entered the OMG Herefordshire competition earlier this year.

Entrants had to film themselves singing a song of their choice and then upload it to the competition's website.

Five finalists were then invited to perform in front of a panel of judges at the Courtyard and it was there that Raye clinched the top spot.

She will soon be heading to Birmingham's LG Arena where she will represent the county.

She said of the final: "It was really good, I was really pleased because they were giving feedback straight away after the performances and they couldn’t think of anything to say which I took as a good sign."

And performing is something Raye – who is in her first year at Hereford Sixth Form College – "really enjoys" having previously performed at the Jailhouse in Hereford and at Nozstock festival last year.

"My whole family thinks music is really important. I listen to a complete mixture of music – I like soul and hip hop and alternative rock and things like that," she said.

Ray chose to sing No Diggity by Backstreet featuring Dr Dre – which some people may recognise from Pitch Perfect's 'sing-off' scene – accompanied by her acoustic guitar as the audition track.

"I really like the song – it’s very hip hop and not the kind of thing I would normally sing but I really enjoyed the challenge of trying to make it a little different. I think I probably got the inspiration from my older sister who is also a singer," she said.

All of the Herefordshire finalists will have the opportunity to take part in master-classes, led by professional musicians where they can hone skills and gain valuable tips ahead of the event.

Raye will represent Herefordshire at the OMG Live show at Birmingham's LG Arena on April 24.
