REPORTS of the abuse that Syrian children have suffered recently has sent shockwaves around the world.

It is estimated that more than 10,000 youngsters have been killed, while many more have been injured or disappeared.

Some have even been sexually abused and tortured in government detention, with rebels recruiting them in support roles and for combat.

One Hereford woman knows all about their plight having cared for Syrian refugees in Jordan for the past 18 months.

Hannah Douglas moved to the Middle Eastern country to live with her husband Douglas and quickly became involved with a group of volunteers called "helping refugees in Jordan."

Since then, she has collected donations across the capital city Amman, sent goods to Mafraq, Irbid, Azraq, Ramtha, Jerash and Ajloun, visited refugee families and organised children activity sessions.

"Aware that so many of the children on the Alliance Church books were not able to attend school, we decided that we wanted to provide activity sessions for the children giving them a time out from daily life, so that they can be allowed to be children again and smile," said Hannah.

The 30-year-old former Hereford Cathedral School pupil set up a "we care about Syria" Facebook page in which people can send picture messages to Syrian children so that they know that people were thinking about them.

Hannah said that they have had a profound effect.

"The children's reactions spurred our motivation and the campaign soon grew," said Hannah.

"The plan is for us to produce poster maps of the world surrounded by messages for us to put up at various schools, community and distribution centres and any child friends areas set up for Syrian refugees."

A winter campaign is already in full swing in which people send a gift to children in Jordan and Lebanon

A donor from Hong Kong sent $60,000, while an online website has also contributed another $28,000.

"Although the winter campaign is drawing to a close, helping refugees in Jordan is always fundraising for buying additional supplies to be sent with donated goods or to buy specialised items," said Hannah.

"Myself and a friend also planned for a container of goods to be filled with donations from the UK to be distributed to remote Syrian refugee families in Jordan."
