ONE Leominster neighbourhood found itself exposed to wastewater when drains reached their full capacity last week.

The row of homes on Cheaton Close were surrounded by water when the drains began to overflow and debris such as nappies and matresses could be seen floating in the water.

But Leominster town councillors Wayne Rosser and Pauline Davies jumped to the rescue and have been helping local people get access to sandbags.

Councillor Rosser said: "It had to be done quickly and everyone worked together as a team."

"We want people to know that the town council are trying and will continue to do our best to help out if people need us.

"There are elderly people living here, young couples and people with very young children so we needed to do something as soon as possible."

Sara Davies, a spokesperson from Welsh Water, said a team was immediately sent to the site to investigate after being alerted to a problem on Sunday afternoon where one of the manholes on the wastewater network was flooding.

“Due to the recent exceptionally wet weather, our sewerage network in the area is running at full capacity. As a result, this caused the flooding which came through the manhole and on to the highway," she said.

“Whilst we sent a tanker to site on Saturday to help pump the wastewater away and have also carried out further pumping on three separate occasions this week, the sewers remain at full capacity due to the prolonged wet weather.

“We will continue to do all we can until the water levels drop. We will then investigate to confirm what other work needs be done so that we can resolve this issue.

“We apologise for any inconvenience whilst we deal with issue. "
