DEVELOPERS planning to build a major new housing estate in Hereford put their proposals on display this week.

Bovis Homes is pitching a plan for up to 150 homes on a 6.5 hectare site on the north side of Aylestone Hill.

The properties - of which 35 per cent will be classed as affordable - will be a mix of social and private rented homes should the application be successful.

Some bungalows may also be incorporated in the plans, but the majority will be two, three, four and five-bedroom homes that are either detached, semi-detached or terraced.

A current property may have to be demolished if the plans are approved, while the proposal also includes landscaping, drainage and highway works.

The scheme was put on display on Tuesday at the Royal National for the Blind - and not all attending the exhibition backed the plans.

Jean O'Donnell, who lives in Broadlands Lane, said that the development will exacerbate the current flooding problems in the area.

"I have watched the flooding over the years and seen the roundabout under water," said Jean.

"It will also have a terrible effect on the environment.

"But the main thing is that, for many years, Herefordshire Council has described the ridge from the road as being a preserved landscape that should not be built on."

Michael Latchem shared Jean's views saying that the proposed site - opposite Aylestone Park - does not have a sufficient drainage capacity.

"I have no problem in terms of housing, because I know we have to have it," he added. "But I have concerns about this development."
