MORE than 500 athletes were put through their paces at Eastnor Castle's Mud Runner event.

The Mud Runner Icebreaker took place on the estate near Ledbury on February 9 and saw 590 people take part in a mucky 10km run, 20km bike ride and 3km run through the cold with mud up to competitors armpits in places.

In the build up to the race, organisers D3 Events worked in torrential rain and strong winds to get the route set up.

The winner of the race, Matthew Page, said on his blog that it was 'a massive surprise to win'.

The next Mud Runner is Oblivion on June 28 and 29 which is a 10km mud-filled obstacle race with a 5km junior race open to all aged between 5 and 16.
