ALTHOUGH poetry is the major focus for Herefordshire's poet-in-residence, Paul Henry, he also has a number of day jobs, including working in radio, and his latest programme for Radio 4's Archive Hour will be broadcast on Saturday, February 22 at 8pm.
The Death of the Spiv, written and presented by Paul, explores the rise and fall of the once-familiar character of the spiv. Having previously presented a programme about Arnold Ridley, Private Godfrey in Dad's Army, another of the show's characters, Private Walker, a wheeler dealer with a glint in his eye and bagsful of charm, inspired the new programme.
“No one under 40 knows what a spiv is any more," says Paul. "The programme is a light-hearted look at all aspects of the spiv, where they came from and where they are now.
“Basically,” says Paul of the spiv, “they walk a fine line between loveability and criminality, and the programme will look at the darker side as well as the lighter.”
The Death of the Spiv will be on Radio 4 at 8pm on Saturday, February 22.
