A FAMILY safely escaped a fire in Ross-on-Wye yesterday (January 16) that left their Redwood Close house with significant damage.

The father discovered the living room blaze at around 6am, having gone downstairs for breakfast.

On opening the room’s door the smoke set off the fire alarm and he was able to evacuate the family, including three children.

Two crews from Ross-on-Wye attended and four firefighters entered the property in full breathing apparatus, using pressurised equiptment to get rid of smoke.

Ross-on-Wye’s Neil Fowler commended the house owner for immediately closing the door and containing the fire, preventing further damage to other rooms.

“It was quite a significant fire,” said officer Fowler. “The room is completely black.”

However given the extent of the smoke damage, the family were unable to return to their property that evening.

The cause was not deemed to be suspicious, added officer Fowler.
