THOSE who put the interests of the Herefordshire community before their own have been recognised in the New Year's honours list.
John Rudolf Gerrish received a British Empire Medal for his services to the community in Dilwyn. He was one of the main reasons that the village kept its school after Herefordshire Council closed the primary more than two years ago.
Dr Malcolm Russell is another who often goes above and beyond to help others as part of his work with the Mercia Accident Rescue Service (MARS).
The former military doctor was given an MBE for his work with emergency services at the scene of road accidents across the county.
Also receiving an MBE is Christopher Whitney for services to the Hereford Diocese – which includes educational work in South Wye.
David Kemp, the music teacher and assistant head at Queens Elizabeth Humanities College in Bromyard, was another recognised for his efforts in education.
He was awarded the MBE as was Keith Pratley for his community work in Hereford.
Meanwhile, collecting OBEs are Leominster’s Dr Margaret Du Feu, for services to deaf people, and Charles Matthews.
Mr Matthews, from Llangarron, is recognised for his work within the fields of technology and innovation.
