The Grove Golf and Bowl near Leominster sends old bowling shoes to Africa
A COUNTY business is helping to turn something old into something new.
The Grove Golf and Bowl – based at Ford Bride, near Leominster – has sent a collection of old bowling shoes over to Africa.
The business tries to keep its bowling shoes in “pristine” condition and had been looking for ways to make good use of old, unused pairs.
Roger Helme, manager, said: “We have been storing them for a long while and we contacted Oxfam to see if there was anything that could be done with the old pairs.
“They put us in touch with a company that sends shoes out to Africa.
“We had nearly 200 pairs of shoes in total.
“That would be enough to shoe a small African village in very distinctive footwear, with leather soles ideal for the climate.
“We can just imagine a whole village being kitted out because we had all the size ranges – from children’s to large size 14s.”
The shoes were collected by the United Shoe Collection Company and will be sent abroad for re-use and to provide inexpensive and urgently needed footwear.
“It’s nice to do something and give something back,” Mr Helme added.
