MORE than 6,000 court summonses were issued to Herefordshire residents for the non-payment of council tax during the last financial year.
In 2012-13, 6,083 summons were issued to 5,465 households – 6.6 per cent of the total.
This resulted in 4,729 liability orders obtained – where a demand is made by the court to pay the full amount owed as well as costs.
The orders recovered £93,127, meaning just 1.4 per cent of total payments were left outstanding.
In addition, 533 court summonses were issued in relation to the non-payment of business rates.
But after issuing the summonses, Herefordshire Council did collect a further £44,539 from businesses, leaving 0.9 per cent of possible funds unpaid.
Herefordshire Council said the “excellent” collection rates are higher than the national average.
