NoFitState Circus dazzles in Brecon
2:29pm Monday 9th September 2013 in News
A DAMP afternoon in Brecon was transformed by a visit to NoFitState Circus.
Like pitching your tent at a campsite and creating an instant home-from-home, the arrival of the big top transformed a car park and saw it metamorphosed into a place of magic and spectacle.
A promenade performance, Bianco: Turning Savage takes place above and around the audience, creating an unprecedented immediacy and excitement as aerialists, trapeze artists and tightrope walkers spin, twist, dazzle and delight up-close. And with members of the company providing human counterweights to raise the artists high above the audience, the precision of the staging is as impressive as the performances.
Episodic in nature, each set piece telling its own story to a brilliant soundtrack from the live band, Bianco engages the emotions from the start and doesn’t let up - the final segment featuring Sage Cushman on the trapeze was exquisitely beautiful, played out against a track so perfectly complementary that the elements became infinitely more than the sum of their parts to create a finale to the show that truly hit the spot - the one where the end feels properly like the end, and where the drama and emotion of the piece drew rapturously appreciative applause. Earlier we had seen the poignant story of a break-up told through a delicate tightrope act, and August Dakteris and his stunning aerial straps performance brought the first half to a fire-lit end that left the audience impatient for more.
Walking into the big top, the atmosphere of the circus is instantly palpable, as the cast and crew mill about behind gauze curtains that hint at what’s to come, casting shadows everywhere while the rigging towers above you, and, with performance, set and costume changes all taking place around the audience, Bianco is a totally immersive experience, one that stays with you long after the last snowflake has fallen to the floor.
The sheer physicality of the performers and the inventiveness of the production are beguiling, mesmerising and unmissable. No clowns, no slapstick and certainly no dancing horses, NoFitState’s contemporary take on the art of dazzling an audience with daring feats, physical artistry and storytelling exerts a siren call to anyone who ever dreamed of running away to the circus - and plenty more who didn’t.
NoFitState Circus is in Brecon with Bianco until Saturday, September 14. To book, visit nofitstatecircus.org or call the box office on 0333 222 9000
