A SHOW which explores the “ancient art of genital origami” is coming to Hereford – much to the displeasure of one theatre fan.

Puppetry of the Penis showcases two Australians who manipulate their genitals into various shapes, objects and landmarks.

And the pair will be performing their act live on stage at the Courtyard in October.

The show has toured the globe and included a spell in London’s West End, but one Courtyard supporter is less than impressed with the billing.

“As a ‘friend’ of the Courtyard and a rate payer I don't believe the trustees and directors should waste other people's money on this type of unwholesome offering,” said Joyce Clare, from Hereford.

“Our local library is under serious threat of closure. If Herefordshire Council has money from the rates to spend supporting this indecency, why not direct that money to saving our library and other valuable public services instead?”

“I wonder if those who currently help finance the Courtyard – the charitable trusts, friends and respectable local companies – want to see two men ‘manipulating their genitals’ promoted and paid for by their generous sponsorship with their names on the printed programme as if they sanction it?”

She added that she will not be renewing her friends’ membership if the show stays in the brochure.

“Those who cry ‘narrow minded fuddyduddy’, you go join the Courtyard Friends, pay the annual subs, buy concert tickets, go to the shows, eat regularly in their restaurant and squander your own money to promote lewdness,” said Joyce.

“They won’t be getting any more money out of me.”

Grant Brisland, programming, learning and participation manager at the Courtyard said the city arts venue aims to offer something for everyone.

“We are sure that those that choose to attend will enjoy their night out,” he said.

“In a climate of reducing public funding we have to programme a balanced season that is commercially viable as well as being artistically challenging.

“This will ensure that the Courtyard continues to be sustainable in the future.”
