A TEENAGER who brought communities together has died following a brave battle with cancer.

Naina Dickens-Chauhan, from Llandefalle, near Hay-on- Wye, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in July.

Friends, family and strangers were all moved to support a fund-raising drive to buy the 13-year-old a prosthetic leg after complications during surgery meant she had to have a below the knee amputation.

Thousands of pounds was raised for the cause, but despite the youngster being cancer free since the amputation, Naina’s body rejected the follow-up drugs and medication.

She died surrounded by 14 family and friends on Sunday.

Tributes poured in to the Facebook page originally set up to raise money for the prosthetic leg.

Naina’s sister Olivia said she was “an inspiration and a true hero” who never once complained throughout her treatment.

She added: “Naina fought a battle that unfortunately got the better of her but she fought it well and had a great impact on everyone along the way for her courage and bravery.

“It should have been me teaching her the ways of the world but instead she has taught me all I need to know. I love you Naina and will never forget your beautiful smile.”

Friends also added their tributes to the Gwernyfed High School student, who loved cycling and horse riding.

Lucy Jenkins said: “Gutted a young girl has lost her life and after showing so much courage and fighting so hard. Bitterly unfair. Makes no sense”.

While Nicky Allingham wrote: “I have never seen a community unite so quickly and sincerely to fight for a common goal. She brought out the best in all of us.”

Olivia said her sister’s name will live on as the family plan to establish Naina Fundraising as a registered charity to raise funds for others needing prosthetic legs in the area.
