Two taken to hospital following house fire near Ross-on-Wye
10:53am Tuesday 12th March 2013 in News By Lydia Johnson
THE BEDROOM of a house was completely destroyed and two people were taken to hospital following a house fire near Ross-on-Wye.
Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) was called to a house in Lea at 2.55pm yesterday, where they found a severe fire in an upstairs bedroom.
The bedroom was destroyed and there were heavy black soot deposits on the first floor as well as intense heat damage throughout the property.
The fire was made worse by hairspray canisters in the bedroom which exploded.
The female occupant of the house discovered the fire after hearing the smoke alarm, and she called 999 and left the house. However, two men re-entered the house with fire extinguishers but ended up needing treatment for smoke inhalation.
Station Commander Martin Lown from HWFRS urged people never to put themselves at risk by re-entering a burning building but instead, to wait for the emergency services.
He added: “Fortunately the woman escaped unharmed because of an early alert from a working smoke alarm. However, the incident shows just how dangerous it is to go into a burning building and we’d urge people to take note of this.”
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
