Half-mast pledge for Herefordshire's Union flags

THE Union flag will now be flown at half-mast on council buildings in Herefordshire to show respect to the nation’s fallen servicemen and women.

“As the lead partner and a key signatory of the Herefordshire Armed Forces Community Covenant, it is important to show our support by recognising and remembering the sacrifices by our armed forces around the world,” said Councillor Olwyn Barnett, Herefordshire Council chairman.

“It has been agreed that we will fly the Union flag at half-mast on our buildings as a sign of respect when fallen service personnel are repatriated.

“Herefordshire is home to not only the prestigious SAS but also the Rifles regiment, so it is important for the council to be able to pay its respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country.”

The Union flag will also be flown at half-mast to commemorate local civic dignitaries who have recently died.

Better late than never. Thank you .

HCC signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant in May 2012. The decision should have been made then ,or before that date.
