A fruitful day for planting on Hereford's Castle Green

COMMUNITY volunteers went out into winter weather with spring in their step and rich pickings on offer.

The Friends of Castle Green in Hereford shrugged off the cold to plant six fruit trees at Cantilupe Gardens, a favourite feeding spot for the ducks in the nearby Castle Pool.

Helped by Amey’s grounds team and a grants scheme, the Friends put three cherry and three plum trees down to root.

“The trees will look great in the spring when the blossom comes out,” said Friends chairman Mark Hubbard.

“They will also provide a great food source for birds and wildlife during the autumn, although I am sure people will help themselves too.”

The cherry trees were specially chosen to line the street, as a replacement for trees that had to be removed when they became diseased.

They're not on the Castle Green - they're on Cantilupe Street - as your own report states!
