Herefordshire commuters could benefit from faster trains
SPEEDIER train services could be in operation in Herefordshire within four years.
Network Rail confirmed it is looking to have trains running at 100mph through the county by 2017.
For the plan to work, a new modular signalling system would replace the current mechanical signalling that is controlled by 13 signal boxes, while automatic half-barrier crossings at Leominster will be converted to full barrier types.
Signalling enhancements have already been planned at Hereford railway station next year, which will allow improved services to Shrewsbury, Newport, Malvern, Worcester, Birmingham, Oxford and London.
The plans are part of a £37.5 billion scheme to improve Britain’s railways, including £550 million in the West Midlands

I've never understood this 'get a faster train'
Surly more frequent trains at regular times would be better(and maybe cheaper) or am i wrong??

I work in South Wales and the train is uncompetetive compared to my car because it's more expensive and doesn't run very often or at convenient times.
Factoring in Insurance, VED, Fuel, Depreciation it's still cheaper to drive by quite a way.
100MPH would give us a 5 or 10 minute saving to Newport/Cardiff. That's not the issue.

i.e. the reduction in journey time will be less than the potential reduction (with the difference being performance time)
And faster journeys will encourage people off the roads, easing congestion.

Having a 100mph railway will enable trains to have more delay time built into the schedule so delays will go down.
