Hereford's Garrick House to disappear from sight

Garrick House is coming down Garrick House is coming down

THE final part in the demolition of Hereford’s Old Livestock Market site has begun with work to take down Garrick House.

Scaffolding has gone up around the former council offices on the corner of Widemarsh Street and Newmarket Street ahead of the two-week removal project.

In its place will be part of the £90 million OLM development boasting a multi-screen cinema, shops and restaurants.

“The demolition of Garrick House is a major milestone in the construction of Old Market,” said project manager George Ray from Sir Robert McAlpine.

“The building formed a major part of the previous site and will make way for new retail units and Widemarsh Gate.

“By erecting the scaffolding and taking all necessary precautions we’re confident disturbance will be minimal.”

Garrick House used to be a Herefordshire Council customer service centre before its services were moved to nearby Franklin House on Commercial Road.

The demolition is expected to be completed within the next week, paving the way for construction of the complex, spearheaded by developer Stanhope, to begin.

Darren, Yes, we Posters have seen the artists view of this new development. It's a lovely looking image. As soon as you see it you mutter, 'What a lovely picture'. Many good people have gone as far as to remark, 'Goodness that's the best image I've seen in a long time. You'll do we'll to beat a lovely picture like that'.
Oh yes Darren my good friend, we've seen to predicted impression of this completed build and it is a lovely picture. You couldn't get a better picture if the paid someone thousands, which the Council did, to deliver us a picture like the one we have all seen.
You might be thinking, 'Good grief Ive missed something wonderful!
But no Darren you haven't missed anything of any great significance because this lovely image, and there's no arguing its a lovely image, does not take into account a number of important factors.
Not withstanding the fact that we are broke and we can't afford it, this lovely image fails to have the presence of water.
Yes my good friend Darren. Water and lots bloody of it. You see it floods. Frequently. to frequently for our liking and of course this will hamper a great deal of people when they want to shop.
The picture also has no vehicles on its canvass. There is no evidence of any traffic congestion at all which is something of a disappointment to us because we all bloody know that this congestion will be a feature when this project is completed.
Yes, Ive seen the picture Darren and its lovely. After viewing it you'll feel compelled to run through some lush green meadow kicking the tops of daisies shouting, 'hallelujah'!

With great respect, George Ray (who has only been in Hereford for 5 mins) is talking through his backside. When Garrick House was originally proposed, planners assured the council that, in the event of it no longer being needed as offices, it could readily be converted into housing units. A scandalous national housing shortage and Herefordshire Council contrives to demolish a perfectly decent building. Typical!

Bobby47 many thanks for your postings that have kept an old codger like me amused when he can't get out and about due to the snow/ice. I have noticed the occasional poster become a little full of themself and believe that no other poster can compete with their polarized opinions. Your response to the poster who annoyed you was quite brilliantly conceived. There are some great contributors on this website, but you are surely the king.

Yes my dear good friend Wyesider, I am King. Anyone who can churn out a consistent bucket of rubbish, drivel, tripe and lets face it, utter bloody nonsense, deserves to be bloody King of the ranters and ravers of our site.
Ive Dug for Studmarsh, Kneaded Dough, eloped with Elizabeth Hurley, duelled at dawn with Jarvis, fired him thrice nightly from a cannon and he still comes back, I've worn my Granny's Clothes, struck Nickel, been subjected to a Restraining Order after dancing with Beyoncee and strangled a Razorback Suckling Sow in some pagan sacrifice to please the Gods and been pushed around High Town in a handcart selling rancid melons.
If I ain't King my friend then Im certainly the Duke of rubbish.
My warmest regards to you mate. Stay warm.

Option A:
Knock down a perfectly good building and replace it with three trees and two coffee carts.

or

Option B:
Don't include the falling apart multi-storey car park in the deal and fund the £1,000,000 repairs needed from the Council's dwindling budget.

The choice is yours fellow Herefordians........
.(although actually its not)

I know - let's do both!
After all - "Here we can"!

Garrick House was an ugly, jerry built, unfit for purpose pile of junk, a blot on the landscape, commissioned by the former Hereford City Council via a design and build competition. A brief was drawn up for design and build contractors to tender by (thus saving the council the tedious job of actually designing anything themselves). No surprise, when the entries were in, that the brief was lobbed in the bin and money talked - Councillors voted to go with the cheapest and nastiest building, that totally ignored the brief - I wonder why. They were then shafted by the smart contractors who waded in with more extras than a Ben Hur film.

Good riddance to Garrick House but, course, the multi-storey car park built as part of the same contract is also an ugly, jerry built, unfit for purpose pile of junk, as witnessed by the forthcoming £1m repair bill the hapless tax payer is expected to fund, but, unfortunately this blot on the landscape remains. A 1980's monument to Council arrogance and stupidity, fitting then that it sits alongside the 2013 version.

Following on from William's Post which got me thinking about how many times we all Post stuff that may hurt another's feelings. I ain't on about this bloody Council. Im on about us and the impact our words sometimes have on oneanother.
Take me for example, I tap away on this keyboard and post my drivel and tripe without thinking how someone else might take my words.
If ever I've posted a message and hurt the feelings of another Poster I am sorry.
In mitigation, anything Ive ever transmitted was only ever meant in jest. I've never tried to hurt another's feelings but if I have I am truly sorry for any hurt Ive accidentally caused.
From hereon Im going to read my stuff more closely before I press this bloody submit button.
