HEREFORD'S 599th mayor has passed away at the age of 77.

Mary Bew grew up to be a stalwart of the county’s political scene.

She went on to represent Hereford’s St Nicholas and Central wards as a Liberal or Liberal Democrat for many years. Her late husband George was a long-serving city and county councillor in Three Elms and became mayor himself in 1987.

Current Hereford mayor Councillor Brian Wilcox has led tributes to Mary.

“I always found her to be straight and forthright and a wonderful servant to the people of St Nicholas,” he said. “Mary and her late husband George were a formidable couple who made a great contribution to the local community.”

Her funeral is at 1.45pm on January 25 at St Peter’s Church in Hereford.
