RACING for the finish line in one of the toughest endurance challenges in the world is Hereford soldier Matt O’Hare.
He is part of the Race2Recovery team made up of badly-wounded British and US soldiers raising funds for forces’ charities in a challenge that has already claimed two lives and seen other people seriously injured.
The group had hoped to make history by being the first ever disability team to cover the 9,000 miles and finish the 2013 Dakar Rally in Latin America.
The severity of the task was underlined when three members of the back-up team were seriously injured in a head-on crash in Peru that claimed the lives of two people in the other vehicle.
Three injured crew members remain in hospital but hope to see Matt over the finish line in southern Chile on Sunday.
The accidents and engine failure mean that Matt and his colleague Cpl Phillip Gillespie are now driving the team’s only remaining vehicle – and all hopes rest with them to complete the challenge.
