Good turnout for Herefordshire's Boxing Day hunts
9:27am Thursday 27th December 2012 in News
DESPITE a difficult few weeks for hunt enthusiasts, thousands turned out across Herefordshire to support the traditional Boxing Day meetings.
From Bromyard to Bosbury, Leominster to Ledbury, followers attended on what is one of the busiest meetings of the year.
The impressive numbers come just weeks after two members of Prime Minister
David Cameron’s local hunt – Heythrop in Oxfordshire - were fined for the illegal hunting of foxes with dogs.
But Graham Baker, chairman of the South Herefordshire Hunt, said the negative publicity had not stopped supporters turning out at Christmas.
This year his hunt again made an appearance in Hereford city centre. Hounds and horses gathered just yards from the Cathedral in Castle Street.

Sadly the ban means nothing to these people, with them continuing to chase and kill not only the fox population but now even local cats. Ross Harriers, have been in court twice in the last two months. firstly for assault on hunt monitors and now racism. Hunting attracts a sad group of individuals who use it an outlet for the anger issues they have. Many of the main players at Ross Harriers have problems closer to home that need dealing with, and instead of sorting these problems out, lash out at innocent people and animals.

Maybe for sport I should buy a cat and watch it slowly kill the song birds in my garden??

its bad for a fox to kill a lamb for food to eat and survive
but its ok for a bunch of humans to kill for fun.

If it was a load of people in tracksuits with pit bulls you can guarantee that they would have been arrested and put in prison.
It does amuse me all the excuses they come up with to justify the torture of an animal for fun. I have seen many a fox walk through a field of sheep and lambs none of which bat an eyelid, not really suggestive of being prey is it.
And its the hunts who behave like terrorists, the only reason sabs dress to hide their identity is because the hunt and their supports would subject them to a campaign of hatred and abuse it has been well documented in the past how various hunts have tormented home-owners who refused them access to their land. And its also well documented how the hunts randomly attack people who are monitoring them, if you're not breaking the law why attack them. Guilty conscience

That said, if by some strange twist of fate it was the 'rat' being chased by the howling horse backed mob and their pack of canines, I ain't so sure where I'd stand on this issue.
I mean, let's be honest, the 'rat' has few redeeming characteristics. Ive never met a rat that I liked. Dirty little things if my view is worth a jot.
Few people associate the 'rat' with good tidings and happy events. Moreoften than not, the 'rat' is depicted as an awful creepy little pest that does little to enhance our lives.
Im not singling out the 'rat'! Other members of the animal kingdom fall into this category. The fly. Even the worm provide me with nothing at all.
What Im saying in my roundabout way is, if we have to chase something, lets chase the rat or the Bluebottle fly. Im sure that we'd all feel better about that.

I think that's a reasonable compromise.
They could chase their chosen quarry all around High Town all day long with little chance of ever catching their chosen creature. That safeguards two things, our civil liberties to chase something if we choose to do so and it protects the rat or whatever one has chosen to pursue.
It could catch on. Groups and Associations could be born from this approach. High Town could become full again with not only shoppers but those who choose to chase a creature.
My warmest regards.

e,Rabbit,Fox,Crows, It happens, has always happened and will continue to happen, when will the interfering unknowledgeable town people decide that all this is unacceptable. Ilegal ! maybe hunting with more than two dogs is, but the countryside is looked after by country people and it seem to be looking good, well done to them and all the normal working class people who support country sports,Toffs, I think not.

To my mind, the morality and the efficiency/effective
ness of hunting foxes with hounds are the most relevant issues - these points have been raised throughout this article.
At best this discussion will be heated, fuelled by the strength of feelings on both sides. At worst it will degenerate into pointless name-calling and rhetoric.
I mean to say, the People we entrust running our country cannot seem to achieve and end to the debate. What chance do we stand? ;-)
For what they are worth my thoughts on the matter are these.
Firstly, let me say I speak as someone who has spent his fifty-something years living in the Herefordshire countryside. Let that negate one of the regularly aired comments of the Pro lobby - "People in towns don't understand the ways of the countryside".
Also, we get the "people in the countryside" generalisation, used to encompass the Pro lobby. That one is utter rubbish in my experience. Of the people I know, 99 per cent are against hunting with hounds.
It is not a town versus countryside argument.
As I said previously, morality and the efficiency are for me the two main factors in this argument. I personally, believe that it is morally unacceptable to hunt an animal to its death for sport. If you are reading this and are in the opposite camp to me, question yourself: Do you?
I have no issue with killing an animal for food or if it needs to be culled as vermin.
This leads on to the issue of efficiency.
If, as the Pro lobby maintain, foxes in the countryside need to be controlled, the most humane and efficient way to do it are a man with a gun or a man with two good dogs.
There - I have made a sweeping statement. Not something I would normally do but I would be interested if anyone can refute it with reasoned argument, based on my qualification of humaneness and efficiency.
I feel I must reply to the comments here about "foxes killing for pleasure", as if by demonizing them so, it justifies us to do exactly the same. Apart from being an argument of flawed logic, it is also based on a fallacy - true, a fox will slaughter a whole pen of chickens (if the chicken owner is stupid enough not to protect them adequately) - not through a frenzy of blood-**** but because he (wait for the shock) needs to eat to survive. He will take the surplus kill and store it for the future. Surprisingly, he does not realise that the food supply generously offered by it's careless human owner will still be there for days to come, allowing him the luxury of being able to return night after night to select his supper one at a time!
I cannot see that when you strip away all the distractions there is anything more to the hunting with hounds debate other than tradition and enjoyment. If the Pro lobby were to campaign on these grounds then so be it.

The rest is all emotive baggage arising from the peasants.
When their hero blair had the power, they thought they had got what they wanted, spiteful class ridden legislation.
Sad to say they were mistaken, laws founded in emotion, based upon one group trying to impose their views on another, seldom work.

Why should those of us who also live and work in the countryside have to move because we object to the cruelty that hunting brings, especially as hunting with dogs has been banned and yet is still taking place. The problem is the Police don't have the resources to enforce the ban as it should be, thank goodness the RSPCA has started to move in that direction at long last. For too long the local hunts have rode roughshod over anyone that does'nt agree with what they do.

Now I wonder who that could be? Let's think about it: an extreme right-wing, wannabe class warrior, who was very vocally in favour of Sainsbury's in Ledbury (about which they 'both' sound off elsewhere recently). Maybe someone who has previous form when it comes to creating fictitious identities and stirring up petty arguments online? Oooh, this is a tough one isn't it?
