Car parking charges going up across Herefordshire

CAR parking charges are going up across Herefordshire just as the Christmas shopping season gets underway.

In Bromyard, Ledbury, Leominster, Ross-on-Wye and Kington, charges are broadly going up by 10 to 20p.

In Hereford city, prices are going up in Bath Street, the Bus Station, Garrick Multi-Storey, Greyfriars, May-lord Orchards, Merton Meadow, St Martins, Town Hall, Union Walk, Venns Close, and Wye Street.

When the increases come into force on November 19, with the exception of the Merton Meadow, it will cost at least £4.70 to park for four hours or more elsewhere in Hereford from Monday to Saturday.

Most short stay car parks will continue to charge £1 for up to an hour’s stay, but season tickets are going up from £520 a year to £705.

Herefordshire Council said the revised changes, agreed following consultation with the town councils, are being implemented because of “ongoing budget challenges” caused by demographic pressures, reductions in central Government funding and the council’s continuing commitment to look after the county’s most vulnerable citizens.

Charges are NOT going up in the Town Councils car park in Church Lane Bromyard. Still free for the first hour, then 40p for 2 hours! CHEAP! Keep it local!!

Merton Meadow is the most horrendously kept car park in the county. No bay markings, huge holes I the road, unreasonable fines, and pay to have your car flooded.

The more **** that the council throw out, the more I appreciate running my own business and not having to contribute or put up with this farce.

The council charging us to park on land that WE OWN. IT'S UNLAWFUL.

Biomech, if you run your own business, then you do indeed pay the council, in a hefty business rate fee.
we have an empty shop that we have just taken on in Hereford town where the roof has collapsed 2 days after signing the lease, and still have to pay the council rates as they say that the landlord has already claimed the 3 month free rate period for this year.
It has already been 8 weeks since we signed the lease and the builders say it will be another 5-6 weeks before we can likely move in!
Wonderful how they treat prospective traders in Hereford isn't it.

I'm happy to say that, apart from corporation tax, I pay nothing to to the council. (don't ask me specifics, I don't know - that's what my accountant is for :P). Even then, I'm in my second year now, my first year was C/Tax exempt and, because of something last year, the first £7k this year is also tax exempt. :)

Oh I wanted to add this when I first read the article;
I was working in the MetroCentre in Newcastle the other month, MASSIVE shopping complex - free parking everywhere.

And of course the good news is that now that Hereford has become derelict and crammed with £1 shops with boxes of crap on the floor, no decent entertainment etc etc. No one has a reason to go in to the city so won't need to pay the hiked up prices :P

(Workers exempt obviously)

I don't pay to park. But like I said, apart from workers, who would want to? It's not like there's any reason to come to Hereford in the first place.

I'm surprised they haven't started charging us to use the public toilets.

There is no such thing as FREE parking really. Someone has to pay for the upkeep of the car parks. So if those who use it don't pay then the costs for the upkeep are put on the rates, and then everyone pays for the upkeep, including those of us who never use a car park.
