Essex model could save post offices

HEREFORDSHIRE Council should follow the lead of its Essex counterparts and take over the running of county post offices threatened with closure, says Jesse Norman, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Hereford and south Herefordshire.

He believes the Essex model' will prevent community post offices shutting.

Essex County Council has recently become the first local authority in the country to discuss taking over the running of those outlets earmarked for closure.

"It's a long shot," admits Mr Norman.

"But with the consultation due to start in July, we must look at this new approach."

I wouldn't worry, this is pure kite flying from Jessie Norman, whose heart might be in the right place but the council is not likely to risk tax payers money on propping up businesses that are losing money. The council can do other things to help post offices, and I believe it is providing money for business advice and development.

Some serious thought is needed here. Where is the money going to come from? Essex is a County Council are far more wealthier than us. If these Post Offices were making money they wouldnt need to close in the first place. The Local Authority risks taking these Post Offices on and making a loss. It surely can only end in more financial losses on a Local Authority struggling to meet demands on its services.
