INTERNATIONAL contemporary Jeweller and Jerwood Prize winner, Susan Cross visited Hereford College of Arts earlier this month to talk to students about her career and practice, alongside a fascinating exhibition of her work.

This exhibition, Drawing and Making – elements of creativity, explores the process of drawing and design development that underpin and inform the making process. It offers a rare opportunity to see the drawings and development of ideas; a behind-the-scenes look at the work that goes into the final creations.

This is the first time Susan has shown her work in her home city, and she was excited about the prospect of speaking to students about her work. “Drawing for me is a gathering tool,” said Susan. “Observed drawing helps me to engage with the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of something. It is by looking and recording that I hope to understand what it is that I want to communicate about myself through my work.”

Susan, who was a pupil at the Bishop of Hereford Bluecoat School, was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Hereford College of Arts and this exhibition and talks are part of her regular commitment to the work of the college, and in particular the BA (Hons) degree in Jewellery Design.

Members of the public can see Susan’s work at HCA’s College Road Campus until Friday, November 28. The exhibition is open Monday to Firday, 9.30pam to 4.30pm. For more information, visit hca.ac.uk
