STUDENTS from Hereford College of Arts have teamed up with the British Red Cross to launch a new exhibition exploring the Bystander Effect, a phenomenon where the presence of others might prevent an individual from acting in an emergency.

The exhibition, which runs at Hereford College of Arts, Folly Lane until Friday, April 25, features a unique collection of artworks from more than 30 students studying Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at the College.

This is the fourth year the Red Cross have worked in partnership with Hereford College of Arts and previous exhibitions have looked at causes and consequences of conflict.

Clare Keil-Jones, tutor at Hereford College of Arts said: “Exploring the bystander effect has given the students an opportunity to reflect on and question their own values on matters which previously may not have concerned them, and to consider how to communicate their response through their skills as artists and designers.”

Vicky Gatley, British Red Cross service coordinator for education and engagement in Herefordshire and Worcestershire said: ““We want to encourage young people not to be bystanders themselves and to empower them to take action to help others. It has been fantastic to see the students interpret the theme in their own way through these artworks.”

The exhibition is open to the public in the foyer of Hereford College of Arts. Monday-Friday between 9.30am-4pm.To find out more about the Red Cross, contact Vicky Gatley at VGatley@redcross.org.uk or call 01905 450413.
