A NEW exhibition opening on Saturday in the Tithe Barn Gallery at The Rodd, Presteigne, features the first showing of new works by Daniel Crawshaw.

This is a preview showing of paintings and preparatory works created through a residency in the Victorian ‘High Country’ region of south eastern Australia as well as pieces derived from visits to Daniel’s more familiar north Wales, before the work travels to Australia for exhibition at the Gippsland Art Gallery in March 2014. High Country Gothic represents a welcome return to the Sidney Nolan Trust for Daniel, an artist who has his roots in the Welsh borders.

“Arriving on the other side of the world I felt like I had the eyes and ears of an early explorer. The forests are often described as ‘gothic’, the ranks of trees rising like cathedral spires, the canopy and shadows offering tantalising glimpses into the mysterious narrative of evolution.”

The project has been funded by the Arts Council of Wales and Wales Arts International Opportunities Fund.

On Sunday at 3pm, Daniel Crawshaw will be in conversation with Francine Stock. The talk is free, but should be booked by calling 01544 260149.

High Country Gothic is at the Tithe Barn Gallery until Sunday, October 6, open daily 10.30am to 5pm
