THE winner of the Courtyard’s open mic competition says he cannot wait to make the audience laugh again.

Phil Pearcy was the stand-out star at the contest during the CourtLaughing comedy festival and won a ten minute slot at one of the Courtyard’s autumn comedy nights.

“I really enjoyed it and I’m looking at doing open mics in different areas, like Birmingham and London,” said Phil.

“It’s the first time that I’ve done comedy in front of an audience.

“I saw an opportunity at The Courtyard and decided that I wanted to do it as I’ve always liked comedy.

“I got a bit nervous when I met the other contestants and they said they had more experience than me, but I found it a lot easier than practising in front of the mirror as it felt more natural and I could bounce off the audience.”

Phil is the house manager at The Courtyard, but none of his colleagues knew that he had a hidden talent up his sleeve.

“Some people got wind that I was doing it a few days beforehand and didn’t know what to expect, but they said well done and it was a good gig,” said the 24- year-old.

“I haven’t really done anything like it before and I’m known as a fun guy rather than a funny guy, but my friends who watched me said that they enjoyed it.”

Phil’s Courtyard Comedy Night spot is likely to be in October or November.
