POPULAR comedy sketch troupe Pappy’s are on the way back to Hay and Brecon – as a trio rather than a quartet and with a shorter name – but nothing else has changed.
The same hilarious messing about approach is intact and for this tour Pappy, who last time set them the challenge of going green, has now charged them with breaking a world record – 200 sketches in an hour.
“Pappy remains in his ivory tower, the trio’s puppetmaster, threatening to close them down if they fail,” says Matthew Crosby, a third of Pappy’s.
“The show is in two parts,” he says.
“The first half is a kind of limbering up for the world record attempt in the second half, like athletes warming up.”
Having dropped a man, the challenge is even greater. “As the show was written for four men, there’s a lot more running around, and we’ve obviously had to drop the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Because it’s such a fastpaced show, we’re constantly coming up with new ideas – a Pappy’s show is always a work in progress.”
As always, Pappy’s steers clear of politics, opting instead for what The Times called “a lot of old nonsense”.
“It takes a lot of intelligence to look this stupid,” says Matthew. “There’s lots of messing around. When you’re on the road all the time, you have to make it fun for yourselves.
“Having started the current tour last autumn, we’re close to making the record and who knows, Hay – or Brecon – could be where it happens.”
Pappy’s are at Brecon’s Theatr Brycheiniog (01874 611622) on Wednesday, February 17, and at The Globe at Hay on Thursday, February 18, at 8.30pm. To book, call 01497 821762 or visit globeathay.org.
