Arts Alive, Shropshire and Herefordshire’s rural touring scheme, is offering local and community venues the chance to experience a unique show based on a set of letters sent between six Shropshire women from 1917 to 1920, and now preserved in Shropshire Archives.
Storyteller and performer Francesca Millican Slater was commissioned to research and write a brand new piece of drama drawing on the records of Shropshire people during the war, and was thrilled to discover these remarkable letters in the county’s Archives. From them she devised My Dearest Girls: The Letters Book, combining character, live music and a touch of cabaret with her warm and witty story-telling.
Against a background of war the women tell each other stories of their everyday lives; as farmers, office workers, factory hands, nurses and teachers. There is gossip and hint of scandal, reprimands and reprisals, tales of dancing for royalty, fiancés on the frontline, grief and fun, and how to feed 100 chickens while on rations. From town to country, across work and play, as friendships evolve, history happens, the war draws to a close
My Dearest Girls: The Letters Book will be at Llanwarne Village Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday, April 29. To book, call 01981 580396/ 540406 or visit artsalive.co.uk to book online.
