WYE Theatre is marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death with a compilation of sketches, songs, poems and readings, which, collectively, it is called A Shakespeare Gallimaufry (a jumble or medley of things).
The entertainment contains some of Shakespeare’s own writing, but not performed as youmight expect, and pieces by other writers over the centures who offer their own take on Shakespeare and his plays. It includes an interpretation of Romeo and Juliet by Charles Dickens, some biographicall details supplied by diarist John Evelyn, a lesson in the English language given to a future Queen of England and a parody of The Importance of Being Earnest and one of Shakespeare’s plays which will have both playwrights spinning in their graves.
It’s all set for a fun evening, as Wye Theatre Company pays its respects to England’s greatest writer.
The entertainment will run for four perfomrances, from April 6-9 at The Powell Theatre in Church Street at 7.45pm.
