THIRTEEN of Jane Austen’s heroines come to life in this bold revisiting of some of literature’s most celebrated works. In this much-loved Edinburgh sell-out hit, using only Austen’s words, Rebecca Vaughan becomes Emma Woodhouse, Lizzy Bennet, Mrs Norris, Miss Bates and nine other beautifully observed women in critical moments from Austen’s major novels as well as lesser-known works or unfinished works. Austen’s Women is directed by Olivier Award winner Guy Masterson, who persuaded Rebecca to take to the stage alone:
“It was while working with him that the idea first came up,” she says. “He said he thought I’d work really well in a solo show, so I decided to do it.”
A conversation about Jane Austen then sowed the seed for the show, which premiered at Edinburgh in 2009.
“If you love Jane Austen,” says Rebecca, “you can come to the show and feel you’re getting the real Jane. I also want people who have never read her to come and realise how brilliant and clever she was.”
***** “Truly extraordinary … one of the most exciting young performers on the British stage” (British Theatre Guide)
