THIS time next week, Hereford Musical Theatre Company will be midway through their run of magical show The Witches of Eastwick, and the actresses playing the three witches have been busy preparing to take on their challenging roles.

Trudy Connolly takes the role of Alex, a seductive sculptress, whose tough exterior masks a very emotionally guarded woman, with insecurities in her body image, and the role involves some very exposing scenes. “When I auditioned, I knew what challenges lay before me," says Trudy. "Admittedly, the idea of undressing on stage was scary, but I have felt very supported by everyone, and have felt it very liberating! From the stripping to the flying, to the magic and quick changes, this show has really been a dream come true for me,” she adds.

Sarah Rowberry, who played Christmas Eve in Avenue Q earlier this year, will be playing straight-laced cellist Jane Smart, who is in the middle of a divorce: “Jane starts out quite reserved ... until Darryl Van Horne turns up. The adult themes in the show have definitely been a challenge as it’s not something I’m used to.”

Sukie, a character who finds speaking and verbalising her thoughts extremely difficult, is played by Emily Saunders. “The biggest challenge in playing Sukie has been her solo, Words, Words, Words as this is something she really struggles with, and it’s a real triumph when she, and I, get it right.”

The witches also take to the air: “I was lucky enough to fly in my role as Glinda,” says Emily, “I am a bit of a thrill seeker so cannot wait to fly again.” Sarah and Trudy will be flying for the first time. “I am very excited,” says Sarah, “but I am a little nervous!”

“I am not a lover of heights so will make sure I just look straight ahead!” laughs Trudy.

The Witches of Eastwick will run at The Courtyard from Tuesday to Saturday, November 7. To book, call the box office on 01432 340555 or visit courtyard.org.uk
