THE Old Boys and Old Girls of St Richard's and the Gatesdene Players present A Man for All Seasons in the Rose Gardens at St Richard's School at 3pm tomorrow and again at 3pm on Saturday.

The play is about the struggle of Sir Thomas More to obey his conscience while remaining loyal to the king and protecting his family. He relies on the law's protection of a man seeking to obey his conscience. As the noose tightens around him he is the only one who remains calm and refuses to be terrorised by the mortal threats that surround him. The ultimate end is both a tragedy and a victory as More cites the protection of Magna Carta at his final trial in the Palace of Westminster.

The play is directed by Hugh-Guy Lorriman, a financial analyst and barrister working in London, who explains why the play is being performed. "St. Richard's has always had a generous attitude towards pupils from backgrounds of financial and family hardship, with a unique pastoral approach, allowing quasi-orphans to feel loved and to flourish. I am one of these. After a family breakdown I was placed in foster care from age 1-5 years old when I was sent to St. Richard's. I am devoted to the school and am passionate about its survival. It is so small, 100 pupils strong, that such survival can never be guaranteed. The play is being put on to raise funds for the school to help it survive and do well and raise happy children looking at the Malvern Hills every day as I was lucky enough to do."
