LEDBURY Amateur Dramatic Society follows a string of successful musicals - Godspell, The Boyfriend, Girls’ Night - with the musical thriller Sweeney Todd.
With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, this musical play is set in 19th century England, and tells the story of Benjamin Barker, otherwise known as Sweeney Todd, who returns to London after 15 years' transportation on trumped-up charges. When he is told that the judge who transported him was the cause of his wife poisoning herself, and that the same judge has designs on his daughter, he vows revenge. He teams up with a piemaker, Mrs Lovett, and above her premises opens a barber's shop in which he slits the throats of his customers, who then become a convenient source for her unique pies.
Sweeney Todd is at The Market Theatre in Ledbury on Saturday, September 20 and from Thursday, September 25 to Saturday, September 27.
