Scratch Perverts mix it up at The Jailhouse

Scratch Perverts mix it up at The Jailhouse Scratch Perverts mix it up at The Jailhouse

By Jacob Ward

Scratch Perverts, no strangers to Hereford, having played Nozstock, Shire Hall and The Jailhouse in the past, made a welcome return to the city last Friday, where a packed Jailhouse spoke volumes about their popularity.

Dry ice hung over the expectant crowd as the set began, the scene perfectly set for the legendary trio, punctuated slightly abruptly by a brief fire alarm, when the atmosphere was temporarily diluted by fresh air before the music was returned to the still enthusiastic hordes.

The tempo of the music was constant throughout the late night set, heavy bass and classic drum loops kept the room dynamic and the signature headgear of the DJs bobbing, practically gluing the crowd to the speakers.

Plus One, Tony Vegas and Prime Cuts, the three members of the group, achieve great things both individually and together – having won the first collective DMC Team DJ Championships in 1999, Prime Cuts claiming two consecutive ITF World Scratching titles and Plus One taking the DMC world crown in 2000 - and Friday night was a great display of this, the three of them creating a magnetic and irresistible sound, leaving not a dull moment all night.

Mixologist is a term more commonly applied to makers of cocktails, combining hard liquor and great tastes; it could just as easily be applied to Scratch Perverts, masters of the art of musical mixology with their great taste and hard and heavy beats.

The next visit to Hereford from this distinctive trio can’t come soon enough, but with the nights we’re promised for the weekends ahead on Gaol Street we are not going to be disappointed while we wait, with the likes of Spectrasoul, and DJ Deekline making his Hereford debut, the bench-mark for December has been set high and we’re in for a treat over the Christmas period.
