THEY call themselves 'the amateurs with professional standards' and with good reason on the evidence of their current production of Fiddler on the Roof.

Hereford Musical Theatre Company (formerly Hereford Amateur Operatic Society) have created a hugely engaging and moving show, with a fabulous central performance from Adrian Shakeshaft as Tevye and an impressive one from Rab Handleigh as The Fiddler - rarely off the stage and playing every note without a piece of music in sight.

Supported by some great ensemble playing from the rest of the cast - Georgina Silcox deserves special mention for her turn as the ghost of Fruma Sarah - Adrian Shakeshaft played Tevye as if he'd been born for the role.

Fiddler on the Roof continues at The Courtyard until Saturday, November 3, nightly at 7.30pm, with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm. For tickets, call the box office on 0970 1122330.

Following the final performance, five members of the cast who have grown beards specially for the show, will have them publicly shaved off by Peter Prosser Hairdressing to raise funds to be shared between HMTC and St Michael's Hospice.
